Common questions
- Does it work with the lid closed?
- Which agents does it work with?
- How does it know an agent is working?
- What happens to my data?
- Why the App Store, and what does the sandbox change?
- Will it drain my battery or keep the Mac awake forever?
- Can it notify my phone?
- Is Pro a subscription?
- Which macOS do I need?
Install agent hooks (Pro)
- Click the Wakebird icon in the menu bar, then Settings…
- Open the AI agents tab.
- Click Install next to Claude Code, Codex CLI or GitHub Copilot.
- In the folder window, choose the agent's folder in your home folder: .claude, .codex or .copilot. Wakebird asks once per agent.
- Restart agent sessions that were already running, so they load the hooks.
| Agent | File | Backup of your original |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | ~/.claude/settings.json | settings.json.wakebird-backup |
| Codex CLI | ~/.codex/hooks.json | hooks.json.wakebird-backup |
| GitHub Copilot | ~/.copilot/hooks/wakebird.json | none, it is Wakebird's own file |
Prefer to edit the file yourself? Use Copy JSON in the same tab and paste it into the agent's config.
Set up wake
In the AI agents tab, copy the wake line, add it to ~/.zshrc and open a new terminal window. Then run wake <command>, for example wake npm run build.
Remove agent hooks
- Easiest: in Wakebird, open Settings → AI agents and click Remove next to the agent. It takes out only Wakebird's hooks and keeps your own.
- By hand, Claude Code and Codex CLI: open the file from the table above in a text editor, delete the hook entries whose command contains
wakebird://agent, and save. - Or, if you haven't changed the file since installing, replace it with the .wakebird-backup copy next to it. That copy is your file from before Wakebird first changed it.
- By hand, GitHub Copilot: delete
~/.copilot/hooks/wakebird.json. wake: delete the wake line from~/.zshrc.- Restart running agent sessions.
Removing Wakebird itself: quit it from the menu, then drag it from Applications to the Trash. Hooks stay in the agents' config files until you remove them as above, so click Remove first.
